Bathroom doors are part of a working room layout. Their movement can conflict with the basin, toilet or person using the space, while the frame and threshold need coordination with the finishes.

For a Singapore renovation, compare the actual opening and users before choosing a folding, sliding or hinged arrangement. A replacement should be assessed against the existing frame and surrounding construction, not ordered from a photograph alone.

1. Measure the complete opening

Record the actual opening, frame and nearby finishes. Ask the installer which dimensions are needed and what must be checked on site. The visible gap is not necessarily the ordering dimension. Clarify whether the existing frame remains, is altered or is replaced, and include any making good in the scope.

2. Test the door in an occupied room

Show the door moving with the basin, toilet, shower screen and user positions. Review both entry and exit. A folding system reduces some movement but still occupies part of the opening. Compare the usable passage and operating effort rather than describing one type as automatically suitable for every compact bathroom.

3. Discuss privacy expectations

Compare opacity, visible gaps and the selected locking arrangement. Privacy is more than whether a panel is described as frosted. Consider the room’s lighting and viewing angles. Ask the supplier what the chosen system actually provides and avoid assuming that a visually closed panel also gives a particular acoustic performance.

4. Match materials to exposure

Explain where splashes occur and how the bathroom is cleaned. Review the actual panel, frame and hardware specifications with the supplier. A moisture-resistant component does not describe every joint and fitting in the assembly. Follow care instructions and maintain the room’s ventilation rather than expecting a new door to resolve dampness.

5. Coordinate thresholds and flooring

Have the appointed team assess the junction with the actual floor and wet-area arrangement. Door replacement should not casually alter drainage or waterproofing details. Confirm responsibilities where the installer and renovation contractor meet. Resolve these interfaces before tiling or final floor work so the opening and frame are coordinated.

6. Check hardware and service access

Try the handle, latch and movement where possible. Consider the household’s users and how the selected lock is released in an emergency according to its design. Ask about adjustment and replacement components. Keep the installed model information so later repairs do not depend on identifying an unspecified door system from memory.

7. Compare the installation scope

Request the complete door assembly, installation, removal, disposal and finishing details. A panel-only price is not equivalent to a full replacement. Approve the material sample and measured opening together, and inspect the installed operation before handover. Keep any applicable requirements specific to the actual works and premises.

Compare the options

Option Useful when Resolve first
Hinged The layout permits the swing Basin and user conflicts
Folding A reduced swing is useful Usable opening and mechanism
Sliding The wall arrangement supports it Track, privacy and servicing

A practical planning example

An illustrative household selects a folding bathroom door to gain space. Reviewing it against the actual basin shows that handle position and the folded panel still need adjustment. Testing the full movement leads to a more complete brief. This is an illustrative scenario, not a completed Crown Interior Design project.

Frequently asked questions

Does folding always give more usable access?

Compare the clear opening and movement of the selected system in the actual room.

Can the existing frame remain?

Have its condition and compatibility assessed by the installer.

Will a new door solve bathroom moisture?

No. Review the room’s ventilation, cleaning and any underlying defect separately.
