Vinyl versus tiles is not one decision for the entire home. A bedroom, busy entrance and kitchen can have different needs, while the existing floor determines which installation options are realistic. Compare exact products and a complete installed scope rather than two promotional prices.

This Singapore guide focuses on choosing between quoted alternatives. Keep appearance, construction and maintenance as separate questions so a material preference does not conceal an unsuitable installation assumption.

1. Identify the actual products

Record the vinyl construction, thickness and installation method, and the tile type, size and finish. Broad labels do not establish performance. Ask for product documentation and view samples large enough to understand pattern repetition, texture and visible joints.

2. Assess the retained floor

Have the installer inspect the substrate and explain any preparation needed. An overlay proposal depends on suitable retained conditions; it should not be treated as a way to hide unresolved damage or moisture. Record assumptions and the response if the base proves unsuitable.

3. Compare rooms by activity

List wet footwear, cooking, rolling chairs, pets and cleaning routines. Ask suppliers to confirm suitability of the selected product for each application. Avoid assuming a water-resistant surface means every joint, perimeter or underlying layer can tolerate prolonged water exposure.

4. Review transitions and doors

Show the finished levels where rooms and materials meet. Check doors, thresholds, fixed cabinets and appliance removal. A new finish can alter these interfaces even when little material is removed. Have the team explain the transition detail before ordering.

5. Price the entire installation

Include removal where required, preparation, adhesives or underlay as applicable, skirtings, thresholds, delivery, disposal and making good. Compare the same areas. A supply-only figure cannot be judged against a complete installation quotation.

6. Read care and repair guidance

Ask how damage to one area is handled and whether matching spare material should be retained. Follow the exact product’s cleaning instructions. Consider pattern matching and replacement access, not only resistance claims in a brochure.

7. Choose a room schedule

Make a room-by-room decision with samples and written specifications. Review current HDB or building requirements for the proposed works. Crown Interior Design can coordinate the floor direction with cabinetry and furniture once construction assumptions are clear.

Compare the options before committing

Option or decision Useful when Check before approval
Vinyl product Its specification suits the room Substrate, joints and installation method
Tile product Its finish and care suit the activity Preparation, grout and finished levels
Mixed materials Rooms have different priorities Thresholds and visual continuity

A worked planning example

Illustrative comparison: a vinyl quote assumes overlay on a suitable base, while a tile quote includes removal and preparation. Equalise the scope before deciding which offers better value. A cheaper supply price does not establish the lower complete project cost.

What to bring to the design discussion

  • Room activity schedule
  • Product samples and data
  • Substrate assessment
  • Complete installation comparison
