Kitchen cabinet design in Singapore should begin with an internal storage plan, not only a door colour. The cabinet drawing needs to explain where pots, pantry items and appliances go, how doors open and how fittings remain accessible after installation.
This guide helps HDB and condo owners prepare a cabinet-specific brief and review drawings before fabrication. For removal work, services and the wider room scope, see our kitchen renovation guide.
Map the contents before drawing the cabinets
List cookware, plates, food, cleaning supplies and small appliances. Group them by frequency of use and the activity they support. Everyday utensils should be accessible near preparation or cooking, while occasional items can occupy less convenient locations.
Measure unusually large objects and explain any reach or mobility needs. This turns a general request for “more storage” into compartments the designer can plan. Review usable openings rather than counting cabinet doors.
Choose the arrangement from the measured room
A straight run, galley or L-shaped arrangement can each work in the right space. Start with the available dimensions, existing services and the proposed appliances. Do not choose a configuration solely because it appears in an inspiration photograph.
Ask for the plan to show drawers, appliance doors and nearby furniture in use. Check what happens when someone stands at the sink while another person opens a drawer. Where a corner is involved, review how its contents will be reached.
An island or peninsula should provide a clear benefit without compromising circulation. In a compact kitchen, a simpler run may preserve more useful preparation and movement space.
Compare drawers, shelves and tall storage
Drawers
Decide what each drawer holds before approving its height and internal arrangement. Confirm the selected runner and its product specifications. An attractive stack of fronts does not establish whether the intended cookware fits inside.
Shelves
Review shelf spacing and whether adjustment is useful. Consider how far you need to reach and which items would sit behind others. Open shelves offer access but expose contents to dust and cooking residue.
Tall cabinets
Specify pantry or appliance storage according to the actual contents. Discuss reachable compartments and equipment access. A tall unit should not obstruct another opening or become an awkward obstacle at the end of a run.
Check the sink cabinet and service access
Account for plumbing and the products stored below the sink. Ask how connections remain accessible and how the selected materials should be maintained. Do not assume all boards or wood-look finishes have identical suitability.
Identify any access panels, floor traps or other services affected by the cabinetry. Concealment should not make maintenance unnecessarily difficult. Have relevant installation requirements assessed by the responsible professionals.
Confirm appliances before fabrication
Provide exact models for built-in equipment and refrigerators. Use the manufacturer’s installation information for openings, clearances and ventilation requirements. Check removal and replacement access as well as initial fit.
List countertop equipment too. A rice cooker, kettle and coffee machine can occupy much of the proposed preparation surface. Coordinate their locations and electrical requirements during planning rather than improvising after installation.
Choose doors and handles for daily use
Compare flat, profiled and textured fronts through actual samples. Assess cleaning as well as appearance. A fluted panel or curved end can provide a focal detail without being repeated throughout the kitchen.
Review handle positions and opening mechanisms with the intended users. Handleless and push-opening arrangements are options, not automatic upgrades. Confirm the actual hardware and how adjacent doors interact.
For the warm palette shown in the concept, compare oak tones with cream doors and the worktop sample together. The final relationship depends on the actual products and lighting.
What should the cabinet drawing show?
- Overall dimensions and the location of each cabinet type.
- Internal shelves, drawers and specialised fittings.
- Door and drawer openings beside adjacent elements.
- Appliance models, openings and installation requirements.
- Worktop edges, junctions and cut-outs where included.
- Exposed panels, handles, finishes and service access.
Final site measurement matters. Treat early floor-plan proposals as provisional until dimensions and conditions are confirmed. Record the approved revision so the quotation and fabrication team work from the same information.
How cabinet design affects the quotation
Dimensions, internal fittings, hardware and detailing affect scope. Two cabinets with the same external length can contain different numbers of drawers, shelves and accessories. If pricing uses a running foot, ask what height, depth and components that unit includes.
Confirm construction materials, internal and external finishes, edging and hardware in writing. Identify delivery, installation, protection and making good. Ask about GST where applicable, exclusions and the process for changes after approval.
Crown Interior Design does not publish a universal cabinet price in this guide. Use the quotation checklist to compare the same drawing and specification across proposals.
Evaluating an award-winning kitchen design reference
If a designer presents award-winning work, ask which award, year, category and project it refers to. Check the organiser’s listing or certificate where available and distinguish a concept from completed work.
Then examine the details relevant to your kitchen: storage, openings, material junctions and maintenance. Recognition does not determine whether that cabinet arrangement fits your room. This guide does not assert a specific Crown Interior Design award.
Before installation and handover
Agree the programme and coordinate any required services or renovation work. For HDB proposals, consult the applicable renovation guidance. For condos, obtain current development requirements.
At handover, operate doors and drawers and compare internal fittings with the approved specification. Review visible finishing, record incomplete items and collect product care information and follow-up contacts.
Frequently asked questions
Are drawers always better than shelves?
No. Compare them against the contents, access needs, selected hardware and budget. Different storage groups may need different arrangements.
Can I copy a cabinet layout from Pinterest?
Use it to communicate preferences, then adapt the layout to measurements, appliances and services. A reference does not establish dimensions or feasibility.
Can I keep my existing worktop?
Have its condition, dimensions, support and removal risks assessed before assuming it can be reused with new cabinetry.
What should I send for a cabinet quotation?
Send the floor plan, current photographs, appliance list, storage inventory and references. Explain retained items and budget expectations. Final pricing may need site measurement.
