A bedside cabinet is a small item with a daily job: hold what you need without obstructing the bed, wardrobe or route through the room. In a Singapore bedroom, a few unnecessary centimetres of projection can matter more than an elaborate finish.

Before ordering built-in bedside joinery, compare a loose table, a small shelf and a drawer unit. The appropriate choice depends on the actual bed and routine, not a requirement for identical cabinetry on both sides.

1. Use the actual bed and mattress

Check the intended bed frame, mattress and any projecting headboard or base. A cabinet height that looks balanced in a render can be awkward to reach from the actual sleeping position. Confirm dimensions before fabrication, especially if the bed has not yet been delivered. Do not use the mattress size alone as the bed’s complete footprint; frames and upholstered edges can extend beyond it.

2. List the nightly essentials

Separate a phone, glasses, water and reading material from supplies that can be stored elsewhere. Decide whether an open surface is sufficient or a drawer solves a genuine clutter problem. Measure any medical or personal equipment that needs to remain accessible and discuss its specific requirements with the relevant supplier. Avoid choosing tiny decorative storage that cannot hold the objects the cabinet is meant to organise.

3. Test drawers and the route beside the bed

Show a drawer or door fully open and check the standing position needed to use it. Review nearby wardrobe movement and the path to the bathroom or room door. A floating unit may free the floor visually while still projecting into a tight route. Tape the footprint and test both sides of the bed. Different conditions may justify different solutions rather than forced symmetry.

4. Coordinate charging and lighting early

Identify plugs, chargers, lamp bases and controls before placing the cabinet. Cables should remain accessible without being stretched across a walking route. Ask the appointed team to coordinate electrical work through the appropriate licensed worker. A concealed charger compartment should not be assumed suitable for every device or power arrangement. Follow equipment instructions and preserve the ability to unplug or replace components without dismantling joinery.

5. Choose support, edges and cleaning access

For wall-mounted work, ask how wall suitability, fixing and intended load will be established. For a floor-supported unit, review stability and cleaning around the base. Consider the corners people pass in low light. A softened edge can be useful, but the actual detail should be agreed rather than inferred from a perspective. Request product-specific care information for the top and any exposed finish.

6. Preserve flexibility where it matters

A fixed bedside cabinet can limit later bed changes or room reconfiguration. Ask whether the household expects a larger bed, a cot or different access needs. A loose table may be the better long-term choice even where fitted joinery looks more coordinated. Compare the complete installation scope, including wall preparation and making-good, with the loose alternative before deciding what the room really needs.

Compare the practical options

Option Useful when Resolve before approval
Loose bedside table Bed or room use may change Height, footprint and stability
Small wall shelf Only a few items need a surface Wall support and reachable position
Fitted drawer cabinet Specific storage and exact fit add value Drawer clearance and future bed changes

A planning example

A homeowner wants matching drawers beside a bed, but one side also forms the route to the wardrobe. A smaller surface on that side and a drawer on the other may preserve comfortable access without sacrificing the nightly essentials. The decision should follow use rather than symmetry. This is an illustrative layout exercise, not a completed Crown Interior Design bedroom or a universal furniture recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

Must bedside cabinets match?

No. They should coordinate with the room and serve the users. Different sizes can be sensible where the two sides have different clearances.

Is floating joinery always more space efficient?

It opens the floor line but still occupies room at cabinet height. Check projection, support and circulation.

Can I choose the bed after fabrication?

That risks a mismatch. Establish the actual frame and mattress information before approving fixed bedside dimensions.
