Sliding and hinged wardrobe doors solve different bedroom problems. Sliding panels avoid an outward swing; hinged doors can reveal a compartment more directly. Neither choice removes the need for a usable standing area, accessible drawers and properly coordinated furniture in a Singapore HDB or condo bedroom.

Choose the door system together with the interior layout. A narrow gap beside a bed is not a complete specification: the person dressing, the drawer opening and the panel overlap all need to work in the same space.

1. Test the occupied bedroom

Draw the actual bed frame, bedside furniture and wardrobe together. Mark where someone stands while dressing and where another person passes. Test doors and drawers fully open. A sliding panel may avoid a collision yet still leave an uncomfortable dressing position; a smaller bed frame or different cabinet position can matter more than changing the door alone.

2. Compare visible access

Ask the fabricator to show the usable opening in every panel position. A sliding arrangement conceals part of the interior, with the proportion depending on its design. Hinged doors also have hinges and opening angles to coordinate. Place everyday contents where the selected system exposes them rather than drawing the internal shelves independently.

3. Coordinate the drawers

Internal drawers must clear the moving panels, hinges and handles. Review the approved elevation with the actual mechanism. A drawer that fits inside the cabinet may not pass through the available opening. Request this check before fabrication, particularly if the drawer bank sits near a panel overlap or a wall return.

4. Select identifiable hardware

Record the track or hinge system, compatible panel construction and intended use. Test a sample where possible, including opening effort and closing behaviour. Soft closing is one feature rather than proof of overall quality. Ask who adjusts the system after installation and whether replacement components can be obtained for the specified model.

5. Review cleaning access

Inspect the proposed lower track and reachable cabinet edges. Compare cleaning tasks with the household’s routine, without assuming one door type is maintenance-free. Large panels also need an appropriate handling and installation plan. Keep access for adjustment available rather than enclosing every moving component behind permanent decorative work.

6. Compare equivalent quotations

Use the same cabinet length, height, internals and finish when comparing prices. Separate the door hardware from optional drawers, mirrors and lighting. A cheaper headline rate can describe a different wardrobe. Obtain the complete specification and the treatment of installation, transport, finishing and adjustment before deciding which quotation offers better value.

7. Approve a coordinated drawing

Retain the plan, internal elevation and panel arrangement as one approved set. Check the finish sample in the room’s lighting and show socket or service access. Resolve dimensions on site before fabrication. If the bedroom arrangement changes after approval, ask the fabricator to reassess the door movement rather than treating it as a cosmetic revision.

Compare the options

Option Useful when Resolve first
Sliding panels An outward swing conflicts with the room Panel overlap and drawer access
Hinged panels The occupied room permits door movement Swing and adjacent furniture
Mixed arrangement Different compartments have different needs Consistent detailing and usable access

A practical planning example

An illustrative couple has a bed close to a wardrobe and wants a central drawer bank. Sliding doors appear attractive until the proposed overlap restricts the drawers. Moving the drawer bank and checking the standing position can resolve the brief more effectively than choosing doors from a photograph. This is a planning example, not a completed Crown Interior Design project.

Frequently asked questions

Are sliding doors always best in small rooms?

No. Review the usable opening, occupied space and contents as well as the door swing.

Can an existing wardrobe be converted?

Have the cabinet and opening assessed for the selected system; a door replacement is not automatically a direct swap.

Which quotation is cheaper?

Compare identical dimensions, internals, finishes and named hardware. A universal price difference would be misleading.
